Nominate a Tree!
The La Plata Tree Study Group is excited to host the inaugural La Plata Tree of the Year Contest! La Plata has many incredible trees and many folks who love the trees so we've created this fun event to take a moment to notice and celebrate our arbor neighbors.
Listen to your heart, decide which is your favorite tree, grab your camera, photograph your tree, then get online and nominate that incredible specimen! The tree nominee winner will win a Sensation Maple (Acer negundo) sapling, donated by Momentum Tree Experts. They'll plant the tree for you, too. Thank you, Momentum!
Only La Plata County residents can nominate a tree. The tree itself must also be a La Plata County resident. The tree must either be on public land or be visible from a public right of way. People will want to visit the trees to determine their favorite! We'll have a map for people to see locations of all the nominated trees because we encourage everyone to visit the trees and say hi before you cast your vote for the inaugural Tree of the Year winner.
Voting is open to all, not just LPC residents.
Nominations will be open for 2 weeks, Oct 1 through Oct 15. Voting is open for 1 week, Oct 19-25. The winning tree and nominee will be announced the end of October (time and place still in the works).
Details for nominating a tree:
· Sometime between Oct 1- Oct 15, use the google form to nominate a tree. The form will not be open for submissions until Oct 1
· Each tree nomination must include a photo of the tree. Photo must be from 2026
· Each nominated tree needs a loving name! What do YOU call the tree? Please include the common and Latin name, too, if you know them
· Include the address of the tree. Please include GPS coordinates of your tree, when possible
· Share why the specific tree is being nominated. Provide enough details both for voters to appreciate the tree and for us to use in the announcement should your tree win the contest
· The contest is open only to individuals, no organizations
· You can nominate only one tree :(
· The winner will be eligible to win only once.
Details for voting for a tree:
· Visit the nominated trees! This website will have a link to the map marking tree locations and once the voting opens (Oct 19), the Jotform will also have a link to the map
· Sometime between Oct 19-25, use the Jotform to vote for your favorite tree. The form will not be open for voting until Oct 19
· Ask your friends to vote! Use this QR code to get others to participate.
